West Oak Lane is not immune to foreclosure despite a significant decrease in vacant homes. The West Oak Lane Community Development Corp. aids in the assistance of residence on the verge or in the process of foreclosure.

The CDC is a comprehensive housing counseling agency that provides counseling to citizens of Philadelphia and the neighboring counties. The mission is to create and maintain home ownership.

“One of the first things you want to do if you think you are going to be late on a mortgage payment or are having a mortgage problem is to call a mortgage company,” said Donald Stafford, director of West Oak Lane Community Development Center.

According to Stafford, it is crucial to contact one of Philadelphia’s 30 counseling centers.

“Be careful who you call because there are organizations out there that claim to do miracles for you. They take you money and they do nothing,” said Stafford.

Despite high foreclosure rates during one of the worst recessions in American history Stafford said it is a great time to buy a house if you can get the mortgage. Lenders are looking for higher scores and have made it tougher to get a loan.
