Haddington: Zoning Prompts Church to Sell Property

St. Joseph’s Baptist Church in Haddington has decided to part ways with its off-site property after a decision passed that denied usage of the church as a rehabilitation center for ex-offenders.

The decision was made after residents expressed concern with the program, worrying a facility like that would negatively affect  home values.

“The program was shot down by the community,” said Pastor Greg Fleming of St. Joseph’s Baptist Church. “They didn’t want that type of program so from there the zoning board refused to pass it.”

Residents appeared in front of the zoning board four times before the zoning board made its final decision. Homeowners also opposed the construction of senior homes, which they said would depreciate property values.

While the proposed rehabilitation center was denied, Pastor Greg said there are similar, more undercover programs in the area run by public officials.

The building located on Ruby Street is currently up for sale.
